Golf Courses in Dumfries
At our Country House Hotel you can play an enjoyable round of golf at Thornhill where Andrew Coltart honed his skills just a mile north of the hotel, or, try the challenge of the famous Solway links course at Southerness originally designed by Mackenzie Ross in 1947.
With a choice of 30 golf courses – you can play serious golf or just a few rounds of holiday golf to your heart’s content. There are also driving ranges and golf professionals to help you hone your skills. If this is not enough then Royal Troon is just an hour to the north. Below you will find a sample of some of the local courses within striking distance of the Hotel.
Thornhill Club – Thornhill
Just a mile north of the hotel, a very attractive layout set in beautiful Mid-Nithsdale -a mixture of parkland and heathland with spectacular views of the Southern Uplands. It really is worth walking the course for the scenery alone. At 6085 yards it offers a challenge to both high handicappers and scratch golfers alike. This is a real gem and should be on everyone’s list – if not for the views, for the quality of the putting surfaces. It’s the kind of course to play on a summer’s evening with a hazy light over the Nith Valley.
Dumfries & Galloway Club – Dumfries
15 minutes to the south of Trigony, a fine parkland course with short tree-lined avenues and some open aspects that can catch the wind. Variety is the key here and there are some fine arboreal specimens. Recently extended with the opening of two new long par 4 holes. A pleasant parkland, wooded and reasonably flat – this represents 18 challenging holes set in lovely rolling countryside. The greens and fairways are kept in immaculate condition – you will enjoy your golf here. A good test for the club golfer.
Dumfries & County Club
The Dumfries and County Club is a privately owned parkland course situated on the outskirts of the town of Dumfries. Bordered on one side by the river Nith, it offers spectacular views of the Nith valley and surrounding countryside. The USGA standard greens are almost the best in the area. Built on eighty-nine acres, it requires a high degree of course management to achieve a par of 69.
Southerness Golf Club – Southerness
40 minutes south west of Trigony, a superb championship links course on the Solway Coast with magnificent views of Cumbrian and Kirkcudbrightshire hills, and on a clear day to the Isle of Man.
Good test for all standards of golfer.
Powfoot Club – Powfoot, near Annan
This course was founded in 1903, designed by James Braid and ranked among the best, yet remains utterly unspoilt and worthy of “the best kept secret”. The first nine holes present a stiff links test and the final nine encompass a mixture of links and heathland, with whins and rough ensuring the challenge continues to the end. The course presents some breathtaking views over The Solway Firth to the North Lakes Mountains and the hills adjacent to Dumfries.
Moffat Club
The excellent condition of this fine traditional Scottish moorland course and the welcoming clubhouse reinforce the notion that Moffat should be near the top of any golfer’s list of courses to play. Its location makes it an ideal venue for a day or weekend trip. Alternatively, it is an ideal first course to play for golfers planning a pilgrimage to Scotland,
